Continuum Robots lab in Hannover

Our friend, Jessica Burgner was recently awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the prestigious Emmy Noether Programme, allowing her to establish a research group with
a funding of €1.26M. Her research group: CROSS - Continuum Robots for Surgical Systems is associated with the Center of Mechatronics at Leibniz Universitaet Hannover, Germany -
an interdisciplinary research center with members from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

CROSS lab's research is primarily in surgical robotics, bringing back some know how from Bob Webster's lab at Vanderbilt Univeristy. In particular,CROSS investigates design optimization, motion planning, human-machine interfaces and sensing for continuum robots. CROSS research is devoted to a sub category of continuum robots so called Concentric Tube Continuum Robots (CTCR). The manipulators are composed of multiple concentric, pre-bend, and flexible tubes. Their work is focusing on NOTES (e.g. for transnasal pituitary surgery) and also neurosurgery locally at Hannover Medical School and also at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Learn more here.
